About this project

The project studies Z80-to-C static recompilation with a runtime modeling the Master System’s hardware. It checks the current bytes and stops when it reaches code outside the compiled coverage, rather than silently falling back to interpretation.

Compatibility

Use the Brazilian ROM, 262144 bytes, CRC32 01D67C0B and SHA-256 484FDF3CB85C1BFD1CA938CFD59FD582A06EE20F9F3686BB3DFD1F7A70193086. The portable release targets Windows x64; suggested CPU/RAM minimums are estimates, not certified requirements.

Documented support and independently tested compatibility are different. AllRecomps has not run these games.

Development progress

Release v0.10.0 documents opening, first door, first boss, second-stage arrival and an 18500-frame exploration route. The AOT candidate count includes potential data offsets and is explicitly not a percentage of real code coverage.

The latest non-prerelease GitHub release observed is v0.10.0. A release does not establish stability, complete gameplay or tested platform support.

Known limitations

The full game is not validated. 16:9 currently uses preserved framing or crop, not additional scenery. Save loading reconstructs recorded inputs rather than restoring an instant snapshot and can take longer for long sessions.

The README discloses unresolved licensing for the smsggrecomp base. Its own MIT interface code does not license that runtime or the game. Controller coverage relies partly on virtual tests and is not universal physical-device qualification.

Getting started

Extract the entire official Windows ZIP and open MonicaRecomp.exe with SDL3.dll and assets beside it. Select your compatible ROM to enable Play; a development compiler is not required for this portable package.

User settings, saves and runtime.log are in %LOCALAPPDATA%/MonicaRecompPrototype. Back up that folder before upgrading. Versions 0.9 and 0.10 share save revision 3; older revisions are not assumed compatible.
