About this project

Mushroom Recompiled uses NESRecomp to translate 6502 code into native C, with PPU/APU/DMA/MMC3 timing provided by the runtime. The source documentation identifies the SMB3 integration and cycle seeds; the project’s chosen presentation name is Mushroom Recompiled.

Compatibility

The portable application targets Windows x64 and asks for a compatible .nes ROM through its file selector. The public README does not establish compatibility with every regional revision or a certified minimum hardware configuration.

Documented support and independently tested compatibility are different. AllRecomps has not run these games.

Development progress

The current v1.5.0-exp package is explicitly experimental. A 3000-frame test reports matching state hashes against interpreted execution under the same hardware model, with almost all sampled cycles native; this does not validate all stages or equivalence with a physical console.

The latest non-prerelease GitHub release observed is v1.2.0. A release does not establish stability, complete gameplay or tested platform support.

Known limitations

An instruction crossing a bank boundary uses interpreted fallback. Widescreen expands supported horizontal scenes and object activation; vertical rooms, bonuses and unsupported scenes keep native framing. Do not describe it as universal widescreen or a fully completed port.

Physical controllers and audible output still need broader manual testing; virtual SDL hotplug checks do not validate every USB/Bluetooth device. Older state formats can be rejected, so save compatibility must be checked before overwriting packages.

Getting started

Extract the entire official experimental ZIP and run MushroomRecompiled.exe. Choose Select ROM and your compatible .nes. Future launches remember that file; a missing or incompatible remembered file returns to the launcher.

Esc pauses into the PC menu for settings, continue, save and load. Save states use five slots and are not automatically loaded by direct startup. Back up user states/settings before updating, and use the current widescreen documentation for supported scenes.
